Digraj Gill: How SLG Transformed My Game

WHERE I STARTED

I started playing golf when I was 2 years old. Even though I had been playing for twenty years, I still have lots to learn. I felt I was misguided by former coaches during my young years as a golfer and as a golf pro. I had not been taught correctly and my skill level suffered because of this. I came to Canada in February to learn from Coach Silva with the goal of increasing my skill level, confidence, and consistency. I didn’t know if it would be possible for me to improve my swing. I was worried that because I had been swinging and holding the club a certain way for so long, I wouldn’t be able to unlearn my improper technique. Before I started with Coach Silva I was struggling with my shots. I was playing in the 80’s and my confidence was low. I was doing my best just the make par.

My family has known Coach Silva for many years, as he previously worked with my cousin (who is also a professional now), and he was confident he could help me improve my game in the few months I had to train before starting on the Asian tour. Coach helped me take a step back and I spent a long time relearning the basics. Coach Silva helped me see that I had been using an improper grip, and taught me how to change that.

WHERE I AM NOW

As I started to get rid of my bad habits, my game improved. I am now much more confident in myself and my abilities. I can consistently score under par. I recently shot my best score of 10 under par, in only 13 holes. This puts me into a great headspace for the upcoming tour. Knowing that I had such a great round, I feel confident I can recreate it on the biggest stage.

I was lucky to get to work with Daniel because Coach Silva goes above and beyond with his students. He not only does his best to help in our training lessons, he also sets up his players with the best opportunities. Coach Silva arranged for me to visit PING headquarters to get professionally fitted for new clubs. The PING headquarters in phoenix fits some of the best golfers in the world. It was such an honour to be able to visit the historic place. Coach helped me have a once in a lifetime opportunity!

WHATS NEXT?

I start the Asian tour Q-school first stage on January 9th. I look forward to competing against the best players in Asia and to get my card on the Asian tour. I have hopes to complete the Q-school in order to secure my spot on the tour. Alongside this, I will also be competing in the Indian tour, at the end of January, regaining my status, and building up my confidence even more.
